Advanced Micro Devices (AMD):
High Availability Solutions for One of the Most Modern Semiconductor Factories in the World

The requirement

The semiconductor concern Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) with operations worldwide has invested over 1.9 thousand million dollars in Dresden since 1996 in the construction of one of the most state-of-the-art semiconductor factories in the world.

The full extension of the plant will produce 5,000 silicon wafers a week from which AMD produces the high-performance processors with a clock frequency of one gigahertz and more. A gas-motor driven district heating power station supplies the production plant with power and is the largest of its kind in Europe with an output of 40 MW.

Moeller supplied for this project top quality system solutions: for power distribution, motor control, switchgear and busbar trunking systems, as well as the services around the engineering, including commissioning and after-sales service.

To make chip production at AMD as economical as possible, AMD placed demanding requirements, particularly with regard to availability, on the electrical systems of the chip factory and consequently on Moeller's products and services.

At the core of this concept is the MODAN® modular power distribution system.
