TR Award for SmartWire-Darwin
Eaton Industries Presented with TR Award for SmartWire-Darwin Technology at the 2010 Hannover Fair.
Bonn ... As one of the leading manufacturers of components and systems for electrical engineering and automation, Eatons Moeller business was awarded the TR Award 2010.
Orhan Erenberk, managing director of Thomas Industrial Media GmbH, Hattingen, presented Eaton Industries GmbH with the TR Award (www.technische-revue.eu) for an "especially innovative product", which is traditionally awarded at the Hannover Fair. The prize was accepted by Dr. Martin U. Schefter, Business Unit Manager for Industrial Automation and managing director of Eaton Industries Holding GmbH, together with Karl-Heinz Arndt, the SmartWire-Darwin development manager in the Industrial Automation Business Unit at Eaton Moeller.
At the award ceremony, Dr. Martin U. Schefter said: "We are very pleased to receive this TR Award for our highly innovative SmartWire-Darwin communication system. SmartWire-Darwin offers cost and time saving benefits for panel and machine builders, not only in terms of wiring but also with regard to the exclusion of possible installation faults. This means that a switch cabinet connected with SmartWire-Darwin has a drastically lower fault probability because the system is very easy to install. We are now following a course that will take us much further. The products we are offering today have customer benefits that are easy to see."
And Karl-Heinz Arndt added: "Our aim is not to change all Eaton standard products from the Moeller business unit, but to make them communication-enabled with SmartWire-Darwin. The emphasis here is really on "all". Even simple operating devices, pushbutton actuators, indicator lights are Darwin-compatible. The response from the market is extremely positive. Customers, who have already installed the system are already saving between 30 and 60 percent in wiring time, depending on the complexity of the switch cabinet - and without virtually any testing and commissioning faults. This is not only the case in machine building but wherever switch cabinets are used. For example, one customer in the Netherlands who installs green houses has been able to reduce commissioning time from three to two days. However our store of ideas is far from empty. Good products never end and we continue to make further developments. We have now overhauled the control circuit devices and contactors accordingly, and the next developments will be in the field of sensors. We now have several new developments with SmartWire-Darwin which will be coming onto the market in the next few months so that sales success will then be clearly in view."
Dr. Martin U. Schefter had this to say on the openness of SmartWire-Darwin: "We designed openness into this evolutionary system from the very start. However, its practical suitability first had to be put to the test. We are now actively involved in discussions about taking the technology out of the Eaton world."
About SmartWire-Darwin: SmartWire-Darwin revolutionizes switch cabinets for machine and system building, by keeping extensive mounting and wiring requirements to a minimum. The striking feature of this system is the continuous green flat cable installed in the switch cabinet - the SmartWire-Darwin (SWD) cable. This connects all components such as motor starter combinations, pushbutton actuators and indicator lights. SmartWire-Darwin eliminates the need for the complete control wiring since both the supply voltages for the contactor coils and also for indicator lights are transferred via a single SmartWire-Darwin cable. Starting from the SmartWire-Darwin gateway, it moreover establishes the connection to the standard fieldbus level, such as Profibus DP or CANopen. With an expansion of up to 600 meters, control circuit devices fitted in surface mounting enclosures or external operating panels can also be integrated into the system. Up to 99 slaves can be connected on a SmartWire-Darwin cable. Users that have already gained experience in SmartWire-Darwin reduced their installation costs by up to 60 percent and material costs by up to 20 percent. The use of SmartWire-Darwin allows space savings of over 40 percent and also enables efficient diagnostics of all slaves.
