INDUSTRY PRIZE 2010

SmartWire-Darwin Technology from Eaton Industries Receives the INDUSTRY PRIZE 2010 at the Hannover Fair. Awarded Both Overall and Category Winner.

Bonn . . . As one of the leading manufacturers of components and systems for electrical engineering and automation, Eatons Moeller business was awarded the INDUSTRY PRIZE 2010 for SmartWire-Darwin at the start of the Hannover Fair 2010. For the past five years, the Karlsruhe-based publishers Huber Verlag für Neue Medien has awarded the INDUSTRY PRIZE for the best solutions developed by German industry. Highly innovative product developments and new products are selected from companies in the industrial, supplier or service sectors. For 2010, a specialist team chose the overall winner and 14 category winners from over 400 entries. Eaton Moeller was awarded both the overall winner title as well as the category winner for the electrical engineering sector.

The expert jury, consisting of professors, scientists, trade journalists, sector and industry experts, assessed all the products entered according to specific criteria: Innovation, effect on increasing efficiency, as well as suitability for small and medium-sized enterprises. At the start of the HANNOVER FAIR the winners of all 14 categories were announced - from drive and fluid technology to automotive technology, biotechnology, electrical engineering, energy & environment, research & development all the way to suppliers. According to the Huber Verlag, the overall prize - the INDUSTRY PRIZE 2010 - is awarded to the "best overall achievement, the most outstanding product of all those entered". Rainer Kölmel, initiator of the "INDUSTRY PRIZE", said the following on the 2010 award: "Eaton Industries GmbH was given the overall prize this year for its SmartWire-Darwin solution. The SmartWire-Darwin technology is designed as an innovative connection and communication system for networking switching devices, which allows the implementation of new switch cabinet concepts. The special benefit of the SmartWire-Darwin technology compared to other solutions is the considerably reduced installation costs, major space savings and a considerably lower engineering requirement." Dr. Martin U. Schefter, Business Unit Manager Industrial Automation and Managing Director of Eaton Industries Holding GmbH added: "We are delighted that we have won this year's INDUSTRY PRIZE - both as overall winners and winners in the electrical engineering category. When a top level jury of experts selects our SmartWire-Darwin technology as overall winner from over 400 entries, this is further confirmation of our high level of innovation performance." Karl-Heinz Arndt, R&D manager for SmartWire-Darwin in the Industrial Automation Business Unit of Eaton Moeller had this to say: "The idea of SmartWire-Darwin has been around since the nineties. However, the technological requirements for the implementation in a compact space and at acceptable costs were not available until recent years. Today, the use of SmartWire-Darwin by customers couldn't be easier. My team and I are naturally very pleased that we have once more gained a high reputation with SmartWire-Darwin."

About SmartWire-Darwin: SmartWire-Darwin revolutionizes switching cabinets for machine and system building, by keeping extensive mounting and wiring requirements to a minimum. The striking feature of this system is the continuous green flat cable installed in the switching cabinet - the SmartWire-Darwin (SWD) cable. This connects all components such as motor starter combinations, pushbutton actuators and indicator lights. SmartWire-Darwin eliminates the need for the complete control wiring since both the supply voltages for the contactor coils and also for indicator lights are transferred via a single SmartWire-Darwin cable. Starting from the SmartWire-Darwin gateway, it also sets up the connection to the standard fieldbus level, such as Profibus DP or CANopen. With an expansion of up to 600 meters, control circuit devices fitted in surface mounting enclosures or external operating panels can also be integrated into the system. Up to 99 slaves can be connected on a SmartWire-Darwin cable. Users that have already gained experience in SmartWire-Darwin reduced their installation costs by up to 60 percent and material costs by up to 20 percent. The use of SmartWire-Darwin allows space saving of over 40 percent and also enables efficient diagnostics of all slaves.
