Fit for the future with new wireless products
Moeller's Xcomfort program is already responding to tomorrow's demands
As a technological leader and supplier of modern electrical installations, Moeller has been a close follower of domestic living megatrends for many years. The findings: In a person's home, his well-being, comfort and safety are especially held in high regard. In addition, there is a desire for energy-saving solutions. The consequences of rapidly diminishing resources – continuously increasing prices – show no end in sight. Just in time for the Light+Building trade show, Moeller is providing once again a full array of intelligent responses to customers' desires. Among them are two electronic "Managers", one of which is responsible for safety matters while the other one is responsible for the more efficient handling of energy (Schrems, April 2008).
Until now, the Room Manager at Moeller primarily involved controls for simple electrical functions in one to three rooms. This will change at this year's Light+Building. We will be showing at the building automation trade show in Frankfurt how much potential this helpful fellow actually has. The Room Manager is essentially the "living" demonstration of what Moeller understands as investment safety: downloadable functions. By means of a software upgrade, existing hardware can assume the functions of a security guard and/or energy-saving sheriff in addition to its own current basic functions. With the new Room Managers – from 2008 and onwards – these functions will be automatically activated or at least included as a standard. Their activation is, as with the upgrading of the older models, subject to a fee and carried out over an internet platform.
New: Room Manager with a Bluetooth communications module
There is also great potential in a Room Manager with Bluetooth functionalities, which is also immediately available from Moeller. This communicative unit does not limit itself to visual or acoustic alarms but additionally sends, in the event of any safety or limitation breaches, an SMS to one or more of the owners' cellular phones. This is done over a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone that is affixed in the vicinity of the Room Manager – a radius of 10 metres is recommended. Naturally, the sending of SMS messages works equally well in the other direction. In this manner, the homeowner can also send a short message and signal the Bluetooth-enabled Room Manager, for example, that it is time to turn up the heating.
Moeller helps to save energy
The times of unrestrained wasteful spending have long gone by. High energy prices and EU requirements fostering conservation are putting the brakes on such behaviours. The goal is to tap the estimated savings potential of the Union – a proud 20 percent at the least – through suitable measures. One such measure is the development and expansion of service offerings for the efficient usage of heat, energy and lighting for end customers. As a leading supplier of modern electrical installations, Moeller is also heavily involved in this area. Three new products will be presented at this year's Light+Building, that are clearly conscientious of their own energy requirements. A pulse input, an energy measurement sensor, and a software that can turn any Room Manager into an unerring control device.
Pulse inputs and sensors collect the information; the energy manager then displays it graphically
Very soon, stricter demands will be placed on energy suppliers. So far they did not have to care, in essence, about what happened downstream an electrical connection, whereas now they are obligated to provide active awareness training under the Energy Efficiency Directive of the European Union. This means that in the future they have to inform users at regular intervals – shorter than a year – as to how much energy everyone consumes, and to offer recommendations for improvement at the same time.
Moeller is already offering a model that shows how the EU requirements can be actually implemented in private homes. It is a wireless type of collaboration between the pulse input, energy measurement sensor, and energy manager.
New: Pulse input for metre applications with two universal S0 interfaces:
A pulse input is located directly at the source and it communicates with the energy, gas and water metres made by the most diverse manufacturers, over an S0 interface or through an optical scanner. The pulse input counts the impulses and transmits these at regular intervals to the Room Manager which has been jazzed up with a special energy software. If the customer possesses an old metre without an impulse interface, it is possible to install an optical scanner at the metre to function as an interpreter between the metre and the pulse input. This device will also be available from Moeller in the future.
New: Sensors that measure actual consumption remotely:
For remote recording of energy consumption, Moeller is offering an energy measurement sensor that will be available in a flush-type design and as an adapter plug, starting in June of this year. It will record the effective power used by connected users up to 1.8 kilowatts and can either be affixed to a user's power supply cable or, depending upon need, can be shared between different devices with the aid of the adapter plug. Its recordings are also transmitted to the Room Manager's energy monitoring software.
New: An energy software that displays the user's consumption in an easy-to-understand manner:
The Room Manager functions as the energy management headquarters. If necessary, it is appointed via software as a savings sheriff. In carrying out this function, it displays actual consumption values in real time – either in pure numbers or in the form of simple bar graphs. It receives the data that are sent over pulse inputs by up to four generic metres or energy measurement sensors, and processes every detail. It can then display the consumption values for the last 24 hours, the last week, the last month, and even the last twelve months. In addition, a trend display can show whether the actual consumption falls within a desired range when compared to the average daily consumption for the previous month, or whether it is gradually time to make corrections, that is for the activation of any alarms – acoustic, visual or via SMS. For this last option, however, a Bluetooth-enabled Room Manager is necessary.
The energy management software from Moeller is a useful tool to view the water and energy consumption of private users, on the one hand, and to uncover electricity hogs, disturbance sources, or savings potentials in the household, on the other hand. One can see immediately when the energy consumption of a particular device suddenly climbs drastically, without a discernible reason, or when a personally set limit value has been exceeded. For those who want very specific information, they can input the price per measured unit in the software, taking into account a specific time factor and the monthly basic costs, and Moeller's energy software will then calculate, upon request, what a full bath or a load of laundry actually costs.
Moeller provides safety
New: Together with its informative assistants, the Safety Manager functions as a reliable Chief of Safety.
The Room Manager can be provided with an additional capability, called a Safety Manager with hazard warning function, via a software update. With the Home Manager, any safety applications must be programmed for every individual project; with the Room Manager, pre-programmed components are immediately available for this purpose. As desired, a simple command will suffice to activate certain logic links, such as automatic monitoring when you leave the house. In a wireless interplay with the Room Manager, the various members of the Xcomfort family warn of uninvited trespassers (via motion sensors), defective devices (via the PDIM-series leakage current monitor), open doors and windows (via the corresponding magnetic contacts), water leakages (via the leakage sensors), fire (via smoke sensors) and/or undesired temperature drops within the home. Sensors without radio frequency capabilities and commercial switches by other manufacturers can be integrated into Moeller’s wireless system by means of binary inputs.
As with the Energy Manager, the Room Manager designated as Chief of Safety has at its disposal three alarm possibilities: A visual alarm by means of the corresponding display or flashing light, an acoustic alarm by means of a peep or siren, or via SMS. In the last case, a Room Manager with a Bluetooth communications module connected to a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone that is always positioned nearby, is once again needed.
Moeller provides comfort
New: 12-channel remote control with LCD display and three timer functions
A remote control for the control of at least 12 actuators is well and good but, as a general rule, your own capacity for remembering is highly required. This is not the case with the new 12-channel remote control from Moeller. Thanks to a clear LCD display of the devices to be controlled, including the possibility to select each, this remote control helps to operate their components, in the desired order and without a cheat sheet. The control of the actuators is carried out via four navigation keys and one confirmation key. Message confirmations are displayed over an LED. An additional feature is that the new 12-channel remote control with LCD display can even be equipped with three timers. Until now, Moeller's Room Manager was the most compact solution when looking for a timer function.
Moeller shows it has good taste
New: Room controller and light switch in a modern design
It was at the Light+Building 2006 that Moeller announced the gradual re-styling of the entire product range into a timeless and elegant design. The first to shine were the Home and the Room Managers, which obtained a new look designed by the renowned Salzburg industry design company Kiska; in the meanwhile, several other products have already followed suit. This year, Moeller is using the Frankfurt building automation trade show to attract attention to the room controller which has a redesigned visual appearance and two technical refinements: It received an additional wall-mounting plate that eases the mounting task, and a stand-by temperature switch allowing to reduce the temperature to eight degrees at the push of a button – providing pure frost protection. As before, a rotary button is available for less extreme regulations of up to plus/minus three degrees.
If you want to see more of the world of Moeller, please don't hesitate to go to the Light+Building 2008.
