IEC/EN 60335 - Switchgear for Household Use: Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances.
Moeller's contactors and motor-protective circuit-breakers are also used for household devices in addition to many industrial applications. Electrical switchgear used on household devices also has to comply with the IEC/EN 60335 specifications for the “Safety of household and similar electrical appliances” in addition to the tests in accordance with IEC/EN 60947 “Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear”.
IEC/EN 60335 covers “the safety of household and similar electrical appliances”, with rated voltages not exceeding 250 V for single-phase devices and 480 V for other devices. Household appliances include for example dishwashers, cookers, room heaters, water heaters, freezers and similar.
The term “household use” is very widely interpreted in the standard. This covers also devices that are not exclusively used for domestic purposes but which can represent a hazard for the general public. These include for example devices that are used by unskilled persons in commercial buildings or in agriculture such as large cooking devices, automatic baking machines in supermarkets or petrol stations, ice cream machines, cleaning equipment for industrial and commercial use, as well as hairdresser equipment.
Switchgear that is used in these devices must pass additional tests for heat and thermal resistance in accordance with IEC/ EN 60335. In the latest version of this standard of February 2007, devices with a current of more than 0.2A must undergo a glow wire test on plastic parts at 750°C, in which case any possible flames produced must be extinguished within 2 seconds.
Moeller products such as the PKZM0 and PKZM01 motor-protective circuit-breakers, DIL contactors up to 15kW and the corresponding Z overload relay fully meet the requirements of the EN 60335 household appliance standard.
