Focus on safety with Xpole

Bonn, April 2008 – Moeller has always given top priority to safety in product development. There are great demands on it and Moeller is well known for the claim to safety and security beyond the frontiers.
The Company’s own Development Department is flexible and innovative, adapting continuously to non-IEC norms.
Thus, the Company’s miniature circuit breakers also comply at present with Branch Circuit Protection UL 489. The additional protection complies with UL 1077.

Worldwide, a total of two organisations are the decision-makers as pertains to technical norms and standards. The rules of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) apply to North America. The International Electrical Commission (IEC) considers itself solely responsible for the rest of the globe. Both bodies of influence have their own regulations, but naturally these are not the same. Another consideration is that miniature circuit breakers built according to European standards must fulfil certain additional standards as soon as they enter the ANSI’s range. There, they must conform specifically to the provisions of UL 489 (in Canada, CSA C22.2 No. 5.1). The provisions of UL 1077 (CSA C.22.2 No. 235) apply to the additional protection for especially sensitive electronic components. The new miniature circuit breakers of the Xpole family incorporate all of the characteristics of these national provisions. Yet, their technical implementation remains compliant with European norms. This means that they can be utilised within the areas where UL norms are applicable, as well as in those areas where IEC stipulations apply.

The FAZ series of miniature circuit breakers conquer North America

As an internationally successful Group, Moeller also supplies the American market with an ever-growing assortment of products. After all, there are numerous European manufacturers of machines and systems who export to this market. The function of the miniature circuit breakers is the same everywhere: They must actuate in the case of overload or short circuit in order to protect the corresponding power supply line. Moeller’s miniature circuit breakers that are adapted to America come in one-pole to three-pole variants with a nominal current intensity of 0.5 to 40 A. The switching capacity of 10 kA remains uniform. In terms of tripping characteristics, the circuit breakers of the FAZ series comply with the C and D classes, which makes them suitable for use in machines and motors, as well as in the heating, cooling and ventilation sectors.
For a short time, in Moeller’s Xpole product range new devices are available that have been tested for compliance with UL 489A. More specifically, this concerns one-pole miniature circuit breakers for special DC applications in the telecommunications branch. Their allowable nominal currents range from 6 to 40A, while the tripping characteristics are limited to Class C.

Unlike miniature circuit breakers that are exclusively designed for the IEC market, UL-compliant versions require a greater clearance and creepage distance. In this country, we are content with distances of four millimetres while North America requires distances of twelve millimetres. Naturally, Moeller also offers the busbar that is suited to this special American design. The product range is rounded off with shunt trip releases and an auxiliary contact. Within a short time the auxiliary contact Z-IHK-NA will be gettable, which allows the use of miniature circuit breaker FAZ NA for 480Y/277 VAC rating.

Overall, mounting of the FAZ series has proven to be just as simple as mounting for all other Xpole products. Here too, Moeller has placed an emphasis on intelligent connection technologies that prevent possible errors before they can arise. With UL-compliant miniature circuit breakers, standard versions are installed using screw terminals. In addition, Moeller also offers a so-called “ring tongue” variant. This system operates with a cable lug. The new miniature circuit breakers blend seamlessly into the Xpole series which is known for its safe and installation-friendly family of products.
