Smartwire-Darwin Innovative Communication System

Eaton's Moeller Business SmartWire-Darwin technology offers an innovative communication system for networking switching devices which allows the implementation of new kinds of switching cabinet concepts. The previous conventional control wiring for switchgear is thus now replaced by the SmartWire-Darwin communication system. As well as the control wiring, this also eliminates the need for the I/O modules that were previously required. This elimination of both wiring and I/O modules also means that the switching cabinet sizes can be considerably reduced, which consequently results in benefits for planning, designing and installation. The enhanced diagnostics options as well as the simple exchangeability and expandability are additional benefits.

Data transfer via the standard fieldbus

The data is transferred via gateways that transfer the data from the SmartWire-Darwin network to the higher-level PLC via standard fieldbus systems such as Profibus-DP or CANopen. The SmartWire-Darwin network starts at the gateway. Up to 99 modules can be connected here to a network. The connection to conventional switching devices is made with communication-enabled function modules that are fitted directly on the contactor. As well as using switching devices, control circuit devices with M22 function elements can be converted for communication on the Smartwire-Darwin network. Function elements are available for a command function (pushbuttons, switches, multi-position indication), an indication function or a combined operating and indication function. Other input/output signals from switching devices that do not have the integrated SmartWire-Darwin technology are processed using I/O modules that are fitted directly next to the sensors / actuators. This considerably reduces the remaining wiring. All connections to the communication system are plug connections. Wiring faults are therefore excluded which further reduces commissioning times.

SmartWire-Darwin: Communication also outside the switching cabinet

Use of SmartWire-Darwin is not restricted to the switching cabinet. Control circuit devices fitted in surface mounting enclosures or external operating panels can also be integrated into the system. A wide range of design options is ensured thanks to the expansion capability of up to 100 meters and the possible connection of up to 99 modules on one gateway.

Simple planning with SWD-Assist

The SWD-Assist software supports the user in the fast and correct planning of a SmartWire-Darwin network. This software makes the configuration of your SWD network child's play. It supports you in the selection of the right functional elements, proposes the correct accessories and carries out plausibility checks. It is also possible to create a specific device description file (GSD-file) for permanent network configurations. This can then be imported easily into the programming system.
