High Rated DIL Contactors for Marine Applications: Switching High Currents Reliably.
Bonn, August 24, 2006
DIL M contactors from 580 A to 1600 A are vacuum contactors with considerable advantages over air contactors. Their electrical lifespan is considerably longer than that of air contactors and they also allow a higher packing density. The advantages of vacuum technology are based on the closed system of the vacuum switching tubes. External influences such as vibrations or dust do not therefore disturb the switching operations in the tubes. The environment is also relieved of switching gases. The key feature of vacuum tubes is their long lifespan when switching high currents. This is due to the reduced contact wear as the vacuum prevents the production of arcs. Furthermore, vacuum technology is considerably more compact than conventional contactors that switch in air. Even higher currents can be switched with parallel tubes such as the new DIL M 1600 which is used with motors up to 900kW / 1600 A.
Use with large motors - utilisation category AC-3/AC-4
DIL M contactors are ideal for switching motors up to 1600 A, particularly with bow thrusters in ships or large compressors or pumps. As a special feature, Moeller is offering a comprehensive range including accessories in the rated current range 185 A -1600 A. Moeller NZM and IZM circuit-breakers also offer additional reliable motor protection.
All DIL M contactors have electronic drives. This provides several benefits:
- Control flexibility thanks to additional PLC control input,
- Considerably lower control cabinet temperature due to a sealing power reduced to four percent.
- Use of small control transformers due to pickup power reduced by up to 79 percent,
- Considerably broader control voltage tolerance than required by the standard for a higher reliability with voltage deviations,
- Long lifespan of the switching contacts due to optimised contact forces,
- Integrated suppressor circuit,
- Auxiliary contact with 2 make contacts and 2 break contacts.
Shipping approvals
For the DIL M contactors, Moeller offers approvals of the following classification societies: Lloyd's Register of Shipping (LR), Germanischer Lloyd (GL), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Bureau Veritas (BV) and others on request. The devices are also UL/ CSA /CCC approved and are thus suitable for worldwide use.
